How to Clean the Fountain Pen

Table of Contents

Fountain pens are a must-have for stationery lovers, but improper cleaning can lead to clogged nibs, leaking ink, and unhappy customers. Retailers often encounter frustrated customers returning pens they deem “defective,” but the real problem is simple oversight. Clogged pens can damage your store’s reputation. Customers may blame your product quality, leave negative reviews, or even defect to your competitors. Even worse, some harsh cleaning methods, such as using alcohol or vinegar, can corrode the nib or damage the resin barrel, voiding the warranty. Provide professional cleaning knowledge to your team and customers. This can reduce returns, build trust, and position your store as a trusted resource, not just a sales shop.

Why should you clean your fountain pen?

Fountain pens are precision instruments, and ink residue can accumulate over time – clogging the nib, affecting ink flow, and shortening the life of the pen. If you don’t clean it during daily use, you may face problems such as rough writing, ink leakage, and even permanent damage. Therefore, cleaning your fountain pen is an important step to maintain its writing performance and extend its life. Here are some reasons why you should clean your fountain pen:

1、Prevent Ink from Drying up and Clogging

  • When a fountain pen is not used for a long time, the residual ink may solidify in the nib, capillary system or ink supply channel, causing poor ink flow or even complete clogging.
  • If you use carbon ink or pigment ink, it is more likely to settle, which requires more frequent cleaning.

2、Avoid ink color mixing and contamination

  • When changing to different brands of ink, the remaining old ink may react chemically with the new ink, resulting in precipitation and affecting the writing effect.
  • Or if you change to different colors of ink, the two colors will mix together without cleaning and the color will become dirty.

3、Reduce Bacterial Growth

The organic matter in the ink may breed some microorganisms in a humid environment, which will produce odors, which will make you smell a disgusting smell when you open the pen cap. Regular cleaning can maintain hygiene (especially when the pen is stored for a long time)

4、Extend the Life of the Fountain Pe

Acidic or alkaline inks will corrode metal pen tips or capillary parts during daily use. Regular cleaning can slow down the corrosion of ink on parts and protect the coating and internal structure.

Basic Fountain Pen Cleaning Steps

  1. Disassemble the nib, feed, and converter/cartridge.
  2. Rinse parts under lukewarm water until ink flows clear.
  3. Soak stubborn residue in a 1:10 ammonia-water mix for 1–2 hours.
  4. Scrub gently with a soft toothbrush or use a bulb syringe to flush the feed.
  5. Air-dry fully before reassembling. Avoid alcohol, harsh chemicals, or excessive force.

Detailed cleaning steps

STEP 1: DISASSEMBLY

  • Remove the ink cartridge/converter.
  • Unscrew the nib assembly from the barrel (if applicable).
  • Separate the nib and feed (check the manufacturer’s instructions – some pens have fixed components, if so, no disassembly is necessary).

Step 2: Preliminary Rinse

  • Rinse the nib and feed under warm water (note that the warm water here should not exceed 40°C).
  • Use a ball syringe to press water into the feed to flush away the dried ink. (You can also use an ink syringe, but this depends on the type of pen you have)

Step 3: Soaking

  • For dried ink: We need to soak the nib/feed in a 1:10 ammonia solution (or buy a fountain pen cleaner) for 1-2 hours.
  • For ink that has not dried, you can use distilled water to rinse it, which can prevent mineral deposits from damaging the nib.
  • Wooden/raw lacquer pen barrels must not come into contact with water!!!!
  • Gold-plated pen tips must not come into contact with acidic liquids.

Step 4: Scrub

  • Use a soft-bristled toothbrush or polishing cloth to gently scrub the nib gap and feed channel. (Note: Do not use a brush with hard bristles, which can easily scratch the nib and some small parts)
  • Do not use metal tools – they will scratch the iridium nib.

Step 5: Dry

  • Place the parts on a non-linting cloth or non-linting paper towel (as these can clog the nib) in a well-ventilated area.
  • Wait patiently for 24 hours to ensure that there is no moisture left in the feed.
  • If you are in a hurry to dry the moisture, you can use a cold fan, but don’t use a hair dryer!

Step 6: Reassembly

  • Reattach the nib and feed after ensuring that no moisture remains, making sure they are aligned correctly.
  • Reinsert the ink cartridge/converter and test the pen on scrap paper to see if it writes properly.

Conclusion:

Cleaning pens regularly prevents clogging, preserves resale value, and keeps customers loyal. Retailers and wholesalers should emphasize using the right tools (bulb syringes, pen cleaners) and avoid using alcohol and the wrong cleaning solutions. Stocking pens with care kits—bundled products such as cleaning fluid and microfiber cloths—can both increase sales and lead consumers.
